“A man is not old until his regrets take the place of his dreams” – Proverb Quotes
She hobbles onto the stage, bringing with her eighty years of memories and, potentially, many years of regrets. But somehow, when you hear her laugh, see her eyes sparkle and listen to her say “I’ve had a great life” you don’t get the sense of someone that has any regrets.
This singing contestant reminds me that life is what it is, and the only difference between those who are happy and those who are not is the choice of perception. She could have said “I’m eighty years old, I’ve always wanted to sing, and I missed my chance. Now it’s too late and my feet hurt and my voice isn’t what it used to be.” Instead she said, “I like singing, so my friends said I should go for it!” and she laughs with delight.
She could have said “I might have had a career on the stage, instead I got married and ended up stuck at home with children who didn’t appreciate me and everything I did for them.” Instead she said “I’ve had a great life. I have seven great kids.” I can’t imagine having seven kids, much less being really thrilled by it.
No! No regrets
No! I will have no regrets
All the things
That went wrong
For at last I have learned to be strong
The key to a life of regrets is to be preventative. I’ve learned to start asking myself:
So, thank you Janey, for reminding me that Carpe Diem is the answer. If I seize each day, the future will take care of itself. If I learn from and let go of regrets, I have more fuel to accelerate dreams. So, I’m parking my ego and all of its messages (make money, have nice stuff, impress the neighbors, be the CEO) and am going to be grateful for the incredible gifts I’ve been given and the dreams I’m going to follow. Don’t worry, I’m not going to sing on stage. But here’s my question: What are YOU going to do differently?
