Four Life Lessons from a 9 Year-Old

AndrewBlog2 commentsApril 16, 2012

I don’t know about you, but I hear and see enough disturbing news stories by 10:00 a.m. to depress Tigger. So this morning I decided to look for something inspiring.

While reading Seth Godin’s blog , I came across this motivating story about a very young entrepreneur. Even if you have seen this before,  I encourage you to click on this link and watch this short film called “Caine’s Arcade.”

If you are going through any kind of change, or are in the midst of inventing a new and better life, or have watched too many reality shows and lost all faith in humanity, this film will provide you with your own life lessons. Here are a few that I learned:

  • Innovation takes passion and courage. Love what you do, and make sure you’re doing something that you’ll be willing to do without a big, immediate payoff. Even when other kids tease him at school, Caine stays true to his mission. I had one friend tell me she thought my new blog idea wasn’t good and I gave up instantly. I need a passion (and courage) check.
  • Hard work is required. I love the scene where Caine’s dad asks if maybe they should close the shop early that day. Caine’s response is “no can do.” I have to be honest – just Friday I asked myself if I should close down the shop early, and I said yes. I have been schooled by a 9 year-old.
  • Every day is a discovery, and learning should be constant. Watch Caine’s eyes when he’s at Shaky’s Pizza. He is studying the arcade games he is playing, coming up with new ideas while other kids are just playing. I love his “claw.”
  • Quitting is not an option. It breaks my heart in one scene where Caine tells someone walking by that the “arcade is open” and the person ignores him. While I would have physically tackled the man, Caine just kept trying — right through the pain of rejection.

I’d advise you to watch the entire story, even through the credits, because the last line is powerful.

P.S. To all of those who supported Caine and showed up on his big day, you have restored my faith in humanity. Take THAT Real Housewives of New Jersey.
